Valentine Sugar Cookies

Delightfully soft and buttery Valentine Sugar Cookies decorated with festive royal icing, perfect for sharing love and sweetness on Valentine’s Day.

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk
  • Red and pink royal icing for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and baking powder.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract.
  5. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk until dough forms.
  6. Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to ¼-inch thickness.
  7. Cut into heart shapes using a cookie cutter and place onto prepared baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are lightly browned.
  9. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  10. Decorate with royal icing once cooled and let icing set before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, try adding a teaspoon of lemon zest to the dough, or use colored sugar sprinkles before baking for added sparkle.
