Southern turnip greens recipe

Close-up of homemade southern turnip greens

A classic Southern dish featuring tender turnip greens slow-cooked with smoky seasonings for a flavorful and nutritious side.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bunch fresh turnip greens, washed and chopped
  • 4 slices smoked bacon, chopped
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 cups chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crisp. Remove bacon and set aside, leaving the drippings in the pot.
  2. Add diced onion to the pot and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the chopped turnip greens to the pot, stirring to coat with the bacon drippings and onions.
  5. Pour in the chicken broth, add apple cider vinegar, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper.
  6. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour until greens are tender.
  7. Stir in cooked bacon pieces before serving.

Notes

For extra smoky flavor, try simmering the greens with a smoked ham hock instead of bacon. Serve alongside cornbread for a true Southern meal.
