Southern Fried Cabbage

Southern Fried Cabbage is a flavorful, hearty side dish featuring tender cabbage sautéed with smoky bacon and savory seasonings, perfect for a comforting Southern meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium head green cabbage, chopped
  • 4 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or reserved bacon fat

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crisp. Remove bacon and set aside, leaving the rendered fat in the skillet.
  2. Add olive oil if needed to the bacon fat, then sauté the diced onion until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet, stirring well to combine with onions and garlic. Cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is tender and slightly caramelized.
  5. Stir in smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  6. Return the cooked bacon to the skillet and mix well.
  7. Drizzle apple cider vinegar over the cabbage and stir to deglaze the pan and add brightness.
  8. Cook for an additional 2 minutes, adjust seasoning to taste, then remove from heat and serve warm.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a splash of hot sauce or sprinkle with chopped green onions before serving. This dish pairs wonderfully with fried chicken or cornbread.
