Southern Cornbread

Traditional Southern Cornbread is a moist and crumbly quick bread with a slightly sweet and buttery flavor, perfect as a side for any Southern meal.

  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • Optional: 1/2 cup corn kernels

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease an 8-inch square baking pan or cast-iron skillet.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat buttermilk and eggs until combined.
  4. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and stir until just combined; do not overmix.
  5. Fold in melted butter and optional corn kernels gently.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pan and spread evenly.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  8. Allow to cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

For a richer flavor, serve warm with honey butter or drizzled with honey.
