Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

A creamy and comforting classic scalloped potatoes dish made with thinly sliced potatoes baked in a rich, cheesy sauce. Perfect as a hearty side for any dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (about 4 medium potatoes)
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×9 inch baking dish with butter.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk and cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.
  4. Remove the sauce from heat and stir in the cheddar cheese, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder until melted and smooth.
  5. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
  6. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese evenly on top.
  7. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake an additional 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
  8. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, add cooked bacon bits or chopped fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary before baking.
