Red Velvet Sugar Cookies

These Red Velvet Sugar Cookies combine the classic rich, cocoa-flavored red velvet taste with a soft, tender sugar cookie texture, perfect for any festive occasion or sweet craving.

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • ½ cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the egg, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar to the butter mixture; beat until combined.
  5. Alternately add the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the wet mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients; mix until just combined.
  6. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto prepared baking sheets, spacing them 2 inches apart.
  7. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until edges are set and centers are slightly soft.
  8. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Notes

For an added festive touch, sprinkle the cookies with white sugar or decorate with cream cheese frosting once cooled.
