Japanese Yakitori Grilled Chicken

Japanese Yakitori Grilled Chicken features tender chicken skewers glazed with a savory-sweet soy-based sauce, perfect for a flavorful and authentic Japanese appetizer or main dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500g chicken thighs, boneless and skin-on, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 8 bamboo skewers, soaked in water for 30 minutes
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp mirin
  • 2 tbsp sake
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (optional)
  • 1 tsp grated fresh ginger (optional)
  • Green onions, chopped for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, combine soy sauce, mirin, sake, sugar, garlic, and ginger. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5-7 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and let cool.
  2. Thread the chicken pieces onto the bamboo skewers, distributing evenly.
  3. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Oil the grill grates to prevent sticking.
  4. Grill the chicken skewers for about 3-4 minutes on each side, brushing generously with the yakitori sauce during the last few minutes of cooking.
  5. Continue turning and basting until the chicken is cooked through and has a nice glaze.
  6. Remove from the grill and garnish with chopped green onions if desired. Serve hot.

Notes

For extra flavor, marinate the chicken in half the yakitori sauce for 30 minutes before grilling.
