Homemade Green Bean Casserole

A classic and creamy green bean casserole made from scratch with fresh green beans and crispy fried onions, perfect for holiday dinners or comforting family meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Blanch the green beans for 3-4 minutes until tender-crisp. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add chopped onions and cook until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add sliced mushrooms and garlic to the skillet; sauté until mushrooms are browned and softened.
  5. Sprinkle flour over the vegetables, stir well, and cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw taste.
  6. Gradually whisk in broth and cream, stirring constantly until the mixture becomes thick and creamy.
  7. Add soy sauce, salt, and pepper to taste.
  8. Combine the blanched green beans with the sauce and half of the crispy fried onions. Mix well.
  9. Transfer the mixture into a casserole dish. Top evenly with the remaining fried onions.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until bubbly and golden on top.

Notes

For an extra crunchy topping, add shredded sharp cheddar cheese on top before baking or substitute fried onions with toasted breadcrumbs for a different texture.
