Homemade Candy Apples

Crisp apples coated in a shiny, sweet candy shell make for a classic and festive treat that’s perfect for fall and special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples, washed and dried
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Red food coloring (optional)
  • Wooden sticks

Instructions

  1. Insert wooden sticks into the core end of each apple and set aside on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water over medium heat. Stir until sugar dissolves.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil without stirring, until it reaches 300°F (hard crack stage) on a candy thermometer.
  4. Remove from heat and quickly stir in red food coloring if desired.
  5. Working fast, dip each apple into the hot candy syrup, turning to coat evenly, then set back on the baking sheet to cool and harden.
  6. Let candy apples cool completely before serving.

Notes

For a fun twist, roll the coated apples in crushed nuts or sprinkles before the candy hardens.
