Hidden Heart Chocolate Loaf Cake

A delightful chocolate loaf cake featuring a surprise heart-shaped vanilla center that makes every slice special and perfect for celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the hidden heart:
    • 1/2 cup butter, softened
    • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 cup all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  2. Make the heart batter: In a bowl, beat softened butter with powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth. Gradually add flour until it forms a firm dough. Roll out and cut heart shapes using a cookie cutter. Freeze hearts for at least 30 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In another large bowl, whisk sugar and eggs until pale and fluffy. Add buttermilk, oil, and vanilla; mix well.
  5. Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until smooth.
  6. Pour half of the chocolate batter into the loaf pan.
  7. Arrange the frozen heart shapes vertically in a row down the center of the batter.
  8. Carefully pour the remaining chocolate batter over the hearts, covering them completely.
  9. Bake for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the cake (avoiding the hearts) comes out clean.
  10. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

For best results, chill the heart shapes well before embedding them into the batter to keep their shape while baking. Serve with fresh berries or a dusting of powdered sugar.
