  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 egg

  • 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 2 tablespoons milk (for frosting)
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Food coloring (optional, for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder; set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  3. Beat in egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract.
  4. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk until dough forms.
  5. Roll out dough on a floured surface to ¼ inch thickness and cut into heart shapes using a cookie cutter.
  6. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
  7. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are golden. Let cool completely on wire racks.
  8. For frosting, beat together powdered sugar, butter, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Divide and tint with food coloring as desired.
  9. Frost cooled cookies and allow frosting to set before serving.
