Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • Powdered sugar, for garnish (optional)
  • Maple syrup, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Place the cubed French bread evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until fully combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing lightly to soak the bread.
  5. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for best results.
  6. For the topping, combine brown sugar and flour in a bowl, then cut in the cold cubed butter using a pastry cutter or fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  7. Remove the French toast bake from the refrigerator, sprinkle the topping evenly over the soaked bread.
  8. Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve with warm maple syrup.

Notes

For added flavor, sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts on top with the crumble before baking.
