French Butter Cake

French Butter Cake is a rich and tender buttery cake with a delicate crumb, perfect for an elegant dessert or afternoon tea.

  • 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch cake pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.
  6. Stir in the vanilla extract until well combined.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.
  8. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, serve with fresh berries and a dusting of powdered sugar or a dollop of whipped cream.
