  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup (75g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Optional: powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until a dough forms.
  6. Divide dough into two portions, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  7. Roll out chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to about ¼-inch thickness.
  8. Using heart-shaped cookie cutters, cut out cookies and place them 1 inch apart on prepared baking sheets.
  9. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until cookies are set but still soft.
  10. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Optional: Dust with powdered sugar before serving for a decorative touch.

Notes

For an extra special touch, dip half of each cookie in melted white or dark chocolate and allow to set before serving.
