Banana Cream Pie Recipe

Delicious Homemade Banana Cream Pie

This classic banana cream pie is the ultimate comfort dessert! With a flaky crust, creamy vanilla custard, and sweet banana slices, it’s a crowd-pleasing treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (9-inch) pre-made graham cracker pie crust
  • 4 medium ripe bananas, divided
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 4 large egg yolks, lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for whipped cream)

Instructions

  1. Slice 2 bananas and arrange them on the bottom of the pie crust.
  2. In a medium saucepan, whisk together sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth.
  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture begins to thicken and bubble.
  4. Reduce heat to low. Gradually whisk about 1/2 cup of the hot milk mixture into the egg yolks, then pour the egg yolk mixture back into the saucepan.
  5. Cook, stirring constantly, for 1-2 minutes, or until the custard is thickened.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  7. Pour the custard over the bananas in the pie crust.
  8. Cover with plastic wrap, pressing it directly onto the surface of the custard to prevent a skin from forming.
  9. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the custard to set completely.
  10. In a large bowl, whip heavy cream with powdered sugar and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
  11. Just before serving, slice the remaining 2 bananas and arrange them on top of the pie.
  12. Spread the whipped cream over the bananas and custard.
  13. Serve immediately or chill for a short time before serving.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use vanilla bean paste instead of vanilla extract. You can also sprinkle some chopped nuts on top for added texture.
