Applesauce Cake

A moist and flavorful applesauce cake perfect for autumn or any time you want a comforting dessert with warm spices and natural sweetness.

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×9-inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  3. In a large bowl, beat oil, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until well combined.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  5. Stir in applesauce and vanilla extract.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined.
  7. Fold in chopped walnuts, if using.
  8. Pour batter into prepared pan and spread evenly.
  9. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Allow cake to cool in pan on a wire rack before slicing and serving.

Notes

For extra moistness, serve with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
